About Me

A Dedicated Music and Math Teacher

I’ve been teaching since 2000 and can honestly say I can’t think of anything else that would bring me such joy every day. I love working with students of all ages and abilities and get so much satisfaction from seeing how they grow and develop in their skills.

I graduated from Washington State University in 2013 with a Bachelor's in Mathematics, a Bachelor's in Music Education, and a Master's in Music Education focusing on choral conducting. I have always known I wanted to teach music. In this fast-paced world, music can provide an outlet for students dealing with stress or change, it can also provide a window into both the performer's world as well as the vast world surrounding us. It is a powerful medium for communicating and bringing people together and I love that I can provide students with the tools and foundations needed to access this medium whether it be for recreational or professional purposes. As for teaching math, I learned in college that I had a passion for mathematics and teaching students to understand mathematical concepts and where they come from rather than relying on memorizing the content. Math can be a subject that many students find daunting and thus form a fixed-mindset about their abilities. I love taking that mindset and showing that anyone can succeed in mathematics.

As for my background, as can be seen in my resume, I began teaching as an assistant at WSU for both the math and music departments as both an undergraduate and graduate student. Upon graduation, I student taught at Hazen High School and following my time in the music and math classrooms there, I immediately entered the public school classroom as a middle school math teacher. Within a year, I knew I needed a change. For my professional development as a singer, I started singing with local choirs starting with Master Chorus Eastside and later joining The Esoterics where I continue to challenge myself as a soloist and choral singer. I also continue to study voice lessons with Dr. Kari Ragan, who brings current research into each lesson and provides me with skills to teach healthy singing.  I also began tutoring middle and high school math at this time and teaching private voice and piano lessons. I discovered quickly that while I enjoy teaching in the classroom, I love helping students grow individually and reach their goals. I have worked as a private teacher ever since while also finding other avenues for teaching music such as directing choirs with Bellevue Youth Choirs, studying Kodály teaching techniques, and becoming a Teaching Artist with Seattle Opera.
